Acne – A Pesky Skin Problem
No one likes acne. They’re annoying. However, almost everyone suffers from pimple problems, especially during puberty. Acne normally occurs when the sebaceous (oil) glands come to life. Acne tends to appear on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back. Although not dangerous, acne can leave skin scars.
This photo explains how acne and pimples are formed.
What Causes Acne?
The main cause of acne is unknown. The following are some factors that can cause acne:
- Hormones – Acne in teenagers starts with an increase in hormone production. During puberty, both boys and girls produce high levels of androgens (a male sex hormone such as testosterone). Testosterone signals the body to make more sebum (the oil produced in the skin's oil glands).
- Build-up of Bacteria – Excess sebum clogs openings to the hair follicles causing bacteria to grow in these follicles which then results to blackheads and whiteheads.
- Diet – Dairy products and carbo-rich foods such as bagel, bread and chips may trigger acne.
- Certain Medications – Birth control pills (depending on the type of pill), steroids and lithium are known to cause acne.
SHOCKING NEWS! Dirty skin, stress and eating greasy foods and chocolate have little to no effect on the development of acne.
Common Mistakes When Treating Acne
In the hopes of having clear skin, we often look for ways to get rid of acne. There’s nothing wrong with that. But, we advise you to avoid these mistakes when treating acne.
Mistake # 1: Overcleansing
Think cleansing and scrubbing the skin too much is the best way to treat acne? Wrong. Overcleansing only irritates the skin, aggravating acne. Remember, acne is not from dirt.
Mistake # 2: Choosing The Wrong Products
Skin care products with chemicals and too harsh ingredients may worsen acne. Avoid those with alkaline and alcohol. We recommend you to look for products that are for “acne-prone skin” and are “non-comedogenic”.
Mistake # 3: Being impatient
Patience is a virtue especially when using products to clear up acne. The skin reacts slowly to treatment. Give a product 1 month. If you see improvements, continue. If you don’t, stop.
Mistake # 4: Pricking and Popping Pimples
This is the common mistake of many. We know it’s tempting to pop pimples especially when there is a lesion. Leave that pimple in peace. If you don’t touch it, the faster it will heal and you won’t have to worry about scarring.
